Celebrating National Tea Day at Colonnades at The Signet Library
On this the day we celebrate Britain’s 400 year love affair with a cuppa, what better way for us to mark National Tea Day than with a visit to Colonnades at The Signet Library.
Widely celebrated as the purveyor of ‘Edinburgh’s Finest Afternoon Tea’ it’s easy to see why when you step into the stunning 19th century building and marvel at the opulent library surrounds with its Corinthian columns and ornate balustrades that line the gallery above. The beautifully placed tables with their mirrored tops, offer a Gatsby-esque glamour, which is added to should one decide to order a glass of champagne on arrival. A must for us of course!
Located in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, in the middle of the vibrant Royal Mile, Colonnades provides the perfect escape from the bustling city but that feeling of historical wonder the Royal Mile instils, is carried on within the walls of the historic lower library. There’s a magic to it and that is even before your food has arrived.
For an afternoon tea that is impeccably served and luxuriously indulgent, Colonnades provides that and more. The expert staff showcase a wealth of knowledge on both the building and on the menu (should you be eager to get the details). The wonderful array of teas, can be matched to both the sweet and savoury stands or lunch courses you opt for. This unique concept of matching tea, is a highlight for us. Yes we have had meals paired with wines and even paired gins, but never with tea and it is a truly wonderful experience.
We caught up with Glenn D’Costa, the manager at Colonnades after our feast to find out a bit more about his love of Colonnades and of course with tea!
What does an average day consist of as the manager of glamorous Colonnades at The Signet Library?
It varies, no day is the same – which makes our industry an exciting one. I could be managing my team during service, holding a meeting with suppliers/agents or could be dissecting my P&L. Every day is challenging yet rewarding.
How long have you worked as manager? Since we opened, 4th June 2015.
What do you enjoy most about working at the Signet Library? The Signet Library is an iconic venue, it is a working centre for legal research and learning but it also a place to meet for business or pleasure. To be associated with a building & society of this stature makes me proud however what I enjoy the most without a doubt is the ‘people’ whether it’s the WS, my colleagues or guests. They bring life into this building.
An afternoon tea at Colonnades truly does have the wow factor. What makes it Edinburgh’s finest afternoon tea? The team’s relentless drive for excellence, consistency & creativity. Our afternoon tea is by no means traditional but its our very own take on this popular British tradition using local produce. Being bold and different is what sets us apart.
What is your favourite thing about Scotland’s capital city? Edinburgh is a compact city, however it has everything you need. Having moved from South Africa where everything is miles apart, its refreshing to live in a city where everything is within reach.
As the Nation raises a tea cup on this National Day of Tea, we want to ask you what is your favourite brew? And of course, what is your perfect accompaniment? Assam, reminds me of my childhood, something my Mum would always have at home.I enjoy the strong bold & malty flavours of an Assam. This might sound boring however Marie biscuit is my perfect accompaniment to a strong bold Assam.
Is there a firm favourite amongst customers? On our tea selection – It’s a close tie between the Russian Caravan & Ginger Chai, both seem to be very popular with our guests.
Any flavours that are a MUST try at Colonnades at The Signet Library? Russian Caravan, Ginger chai without a doubt. However in addition, our very own Signet Blend (fairly similar to a Breakfast tea) or even our Scottish grown Rose Smoked or Garrocher Mixed Berry.
We hope you are all enjoying a relaxing cuppa today, we would love to hear what your favourite kind is?
